... Dig the past ...
Split is an ancient city on Adriatic Sea, developed around a palace
built by Roman Emperor Diocletian at the end of the third century AD, on the bay
of Aspalathos.
Here, after abdicating on the first of May in A.D. 305, he spent the last
years of his life. The bay is located on the south side of a short peninsula
running out from the Dalmatian coast into the Adriatic, four miles from the site
of Salona, the capital of the Roman province of
Dalmatia.
In November 1979 UNESCO, in line with the international convention concerning
the cultural and natural heritage, adopted a proposal that the historic Split
inner city around the Palace, should be included in the register of the World
Cultural Heritage.
I spent a few summers there from 1985 to 1989, and fell in love with the city
at the first sight. Since the old core of the city hasn't changed much, I've
decided to show these old pictures anyway. The background is a bit different now
with some new blocks of buildings which don't affect the general impression.
Also, the whole
Croatian Riviera is a dreamy story for itself and well worth of
exploration I would recommend to anyone. You'd be surprised and thrilled for
life!
The photos here are from my old personal photo album. I don't have the
film anymore, only 4"x5" prints. They are obviously faded by the time,
but in my memory, they are still as sharp and colourful as they were
when I was taking them. |
