... Disappear ... During my visit I saw many houses literally disappearing from the face of the town. Many I remember from the times I lived there. Now, their owners either passed away or left. I was filled with deep sadness realizing how many people suffer from all different kinds of cancer there. The number of people skyrocketed in the last years. Everyone I know, and everyone they know, has someone in the family who died of cancer in the last ten years. The general opinion is that it's caused by the accident in Chernobyl. This is not only the case in Serbia. Romania and Bulgaria are in similar condition. In Serbia though, this was worsened by the radioactive bombs (depleted uranium) dropped by NATO in 1999. My mum was one of the unfortunate people who passed away from cancer while I was visiting her... These houses give a good picture of this condition...
