BCIT Broadcast Building Renovation and Addition
project was done as a final
project at the Architecture and Building Technology Diploma Program in 2001.
The team was Mona Tsui, Craig Abercrombie and Branislav Vrbaski. This was an
industry sponsored project and was awarded, together with two other student
projects.
The main idea for our project was to show the broadcast character of such
building, the visual media as a final product of education students receive
there. This brought us to a concept of a screen as the main architectural
feature. This was executed in two ways. First, we made the
main entrance in
glass, with projectors shooting images to different panes of glass. In front
of the glass facade, we designed another screen made of steel creating a
grid of square voids. This screen was supporting an overhang around the
curtain wall that provided for some shade for the projected images. Second,
we created a
glass facade on one of the new walls in front of the
gathering/study spaces. The intent of this was to have students moving in
the space appear as moving images on a screen.
Our design satisfied all project requirements, and provided
additional
spaces for student studying, meeting and relaxation.
